Fashion Week FIT Student Major In Style
NY1 News covers Fashion Week from Lincoln Center, where the world's top designers showcase their newest collections for the spring of 2014.
New York Fashion Week is here, but for those who can't get tickets to the shows, there is one place to go and see what's hot right now and what trends are up-and-coming. NY1's Stephanie Simon filed the following report.
It's fashion week in New York City, but every week is fashion week at the Fashion Institute of Technology.
There are about 10,000 students enrolled at FIT in nearly 50 different majors, though looking stylish could be everyone's minor.
"For me, everyday to go to school is like a runway, so everybody is doing their best to dress well," says FIT fashion merchandising major Francois Jablonski.
Q: Are you checking out all the other people's outfits?
"Yes, of course I have to look at everybody else's outfits, because I want to steal some ideas," replied FIT fashion merchandising major Sade Lawson.
"It is always fashion week here. It's a little intimidating actually," says FIT advertising and marketing major Alex Kingston.
In fact, students at FIT say they can often guess someone's major by the way they dress.
"People who are art majors, they usually tend to be a little bit more funky," Kingston says.
Walking through the campus, the students certainly show their unique sense of style, and perhaps it's no surprise that the faculty and staff do as well.
"They're out there too, I mean they know what's happening, and they're trendy," says FIT President Joyce Brown.
Over at the Museum at FIT, the curators say everyone does a certain amount of research just watching the students go by.
So, what are the hot looks for fall?
"Lots of camo, accessories, leggings," one curator says.
"Another huge thing we're seeing is the resurgence of 90's fashion, so 1990s coming back. Doc Martens, over-sized plaid shirts, crop tops and jean shorts," says Museum at FIT Assistant Curator Emma McClendon.
Forget the front row at fashion week. FIT is the front lines of fashion.
"So, a little cat in my pocket here, and some vintage shorts that I studded myself, and here some vintage plastic shoes from the '90s," says FIT fashion design major Annya Marchenko.
"It really is a kind of glimpse, not only of fashion now but maybe fashion in the future," says Museum at FIT Director Valerie Steele.
"Every fashion possible you want to see, it's here - Rosie the Riveter, go girls," says FIT photography major Blair Conner.
