In Memory of Samuel Alexander Oster

Sam was born in Brooklyn, New York.   After graduating high school he enlisted in the US Army. When discharged from the Army he attended FIT. Sam graduated FIT in the class of 6/1949 with a special award for excellence in Scientific Management and as Valedictorian of his class.  He then had a very prolific career in the textile industry working for such companies as Campus Girl, Glenn of Michigan, Bali Bra, Ellen Tracy and Barco of California.  He held positions of Management, Director of Operations and Vice President. At one point in the late 1960’s with a grant from the government he began his own company with the goal of training African American - engineers in the textile industry.  Though it did not take off as he had hoped it was a novel idea for the time and did help train some engineers.  Sam had a very dedicated work ethic most times working 6 days per week, always dressing in a suit and working until the age of 75. He was very proud of his education at FIT and inspired my young people to go into the industry.

He is survived by Sylvia, his wife of 62 years and 3 daughters, 10 grandchildren and 3 great grandsons.  He is missed by all who knew him.
